Hair Surgery

The success of the operation largely depends on the experience and expertise of the doctor, the choices of technical equipment, and a well-organized team. We are very aware that some newer techniques and applications, though scientifically tested and approved, also have disadvantages. Therefore, we offer patients only solutions that have been tested with the least amount of risk.

What is a follicular unit?
A follicular unit is a naturally-occurring group of one, two, or three (sometimes, four) hair follicles found in the skin and distinguishable only under a three-dimensional microscope.
What is the source of transplanted hair and how is it obtained?
In the FUT method, the follicular units to be transplanted are extracted in the shape of a thin strip from the hairy part of the scalp between the two ears. This method is called follicular unit transplantation. At Transmed, each follicular unit to be transplanted is dissected under a microscope with great care and then prepared for hair restoration. Each unit is a graft that is transplanted to its new location.
In FUE technique, on the other hand, hair follicles are obtained one by one using special equipment. In principle, this technique allows the extraction of body hair to be transplanted to the scalp. The advantage of this technique is that it does not leave any scars where hair has been extracted. The disadvantage is that it requires much more time than the FUT method to obtain the same number of grafts.
In both FUT and FUE, grafts are placed on the scalp using the same technique as a specialist combines both of them. At present, we are able to transplant 40 to 90 follicular units (about 150 strands of hair) per square centimetre, depending on the density of the donor’s area.
